Biology Midterm 2
  1. The Hardy-Weinberg Principle
    1. Regarding Entire population, not just individuals.
      1. When alleles are transmitted via meiosis and random combination of gametes, their frequencies do not change over time. For evolution to happen, some other factor(s) must come into play.
        1. 5 assumptions must be met:
          1. 1) No natural selection
            1. 2) No genetic drift or random allele frequency changes
              1. 3) No gene flow
                1. 4) No Mutation
                  1. 5) Random mating with respect to gene.
              2. p2 + 2pq +q2 = 1
                1. Serves as null hypothesis when biologists want to test whether on of the evolutionary processes is at work.
                2. Natural Selection
                  1. Can only occur if heritable variation exists.
                    1. Alleles for favoured phenotype increse in frequency while others decrease. Result is evolution.
                      1. Evolution occurs when heritable variation leads to differential success in survival and reproduction (fitness).
                      2. Types of Natural Selection:
                        1. 1) DIrectional Selection
                          1. Average phenotype of population changes in one direction.
                            1. Tends to reduce genetic diversity.
                              1. If continues over time, favoured alleles eventually approach fixation (1.0 frequency) and disadvantageous alleles approach loss.
                                1. **Loss/fixation may not always occur.
                            2. 2) Purifying Selection
                              1. Lowers frequency or even eliminates deleterious alleles.
                                1. ***Associated with the other types of selection.
                                2. Occurs when disadvantageous alleles decline in frequency.
                                3. 3) Stab
