B3 D-F
  1. D
    1. In mammals, body cells are diploid (two copies of each chromosomes)
      1. Most new body cells are produced by mitosis
        1. Prior to mitosis DNA replication occurs
          1. Mitosis is needed for growth, replacement of cells, repair of tissues and asexual reproduction
            1. Gametes are produced by meiosis
              1. In sexual reproduction, to produce a unique individual, half the genes come from each parent
                1. Gametes are haploid cells (contain one chromosomes of body cells)
                  1. Gametes have half the number of chromosomes of body cells
                    1. In sexual reproduction gametes join in fertilisation
                      1. In mitosis the chromosomes line up along the centre of the cell, they then divide and copies move to opposite poles of the cell
                        1. DNA replication involves: 'Unzipping' the DNA to form single strands. Forming double strands form by complementary base pairings
                        2. E
                          1. The ventricles pump blood
                            1. The left side pump blood to the body
                              1. The semilunar, tricuspid and bicuspid valves prevent backflow
                                1. The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs
                                  1. Haemoglobin in red blood cells reacts with oxygen in the lungs to oxyhaemoglobin
                                    1. Oxyhaemoglobin releases oxygen in tissues to form haemoglobin
                                      1. Blood moves around the body in arteries, veins and capillaries
                                        1. Arteries transports blood away from the heart
                                          1. Veins transports blood to the heart
                                            1. Capillaries exchange materials with tissues
                                              1. Blood in arteries is under higher pressure than blood in veins
                                                1. A double circulatory system is one in which blood travels through the heart twice during on complete circuit
                                                2. F
                                                  1. Many plants can grow continuously
                                                    1. plants mainly gain height through cell enlargement
                                                      1. Many plant ells retain the ability to differentiate
                                                        1. Plant cell division is mainly restricted to areas called meristems
                                                          1. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can develop into different cells, tissues and organs
                                                            1. The process of cells becoming specialised is called differentiation
                                                              1. Growth is cell division followed by cells becoming specialsed
                                                                1. Wet mass is less accurate due to the variable water content
                                                                  1. Growth can be measured as an increase in height, wet mass, or dry mass
                                                                    1. Bacterial cells lack: a 'true' nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts
                                                                      1. Vacuoles in plants contain cell sap and provides support
                                                                        1. The plant cell wall is made of cellulose and provides support
