- they route data packets along network cabiling
- if this didn't happen then the data
would have to go down every
internet network to ensure it gets to
the right destination
- the destination of the packet is on the header of it,
and is essentially the post code of the destination
- the address allows the packet to use the most efficient route
- if you have broadband at home then you use a modem/router
- the modem recieves the broadband signal from your ISP via the telephone network
- the router part then sends the packets of information to the correct machine in your house
