  1. Importance of Listening
    1. Obtaining comprehensible input in one's first and any subsequent languages.
      1. A universal communicative event: we listen considerably more than we read, write or speak.
      2. What is Listening?
        1. The process of receiving, attending and understanding auditory messages; that is messages transmitted through the medium of sound.
          1. The process moves through the first 3 steps - receiving, attending, understanding - in sequence. Responding or remembering may not follow.
            1. Listening Process
              1. Hearing the speaker
                1. Understand what the speaker is saying
                  1. Making judgement based on the understanding
                2. Difference Between Listening & Spoken Language
                  1. Convention of Spoken Language
                    1. Putting words, phrases and sentences together
                      1. Vocalizing what they want to say - pronunciation and intonantion
                        1. Possessing the ability to be reasonably fluent
                          1. Stretching the language they know to cope with new situations
                            1. Interaction is more than just putting a message together ; responding to what other people say
                              1. Choosing language that is appropriate for the person you are talking to
                                1. Taking turns in a conversation
                                  1. Knowing how to interupt
                                    1. Knowing how to disagree politely
                                      1. Encouraging others to speak
