What were the causes of poverty?Due to unemployment, this was especially difficult if you had a large family.Also poverty was caused by people being ill or disabled and unable to work, as well as this old age was a reason for people being unable to work and unable to earn.

They must never go into the country unless they walk.They must never contribute anything to their church or chapel, or give any help to a neighbour which costs them money. They cannot save.The children must have no pocket money.The father must smoke no tobacco.The mother must never buy any pretty clothes.Should a child fall ill it must be attended by the parish doctor.Finally, the wage earner must never be absent from his work for a single day.
