Development of suicide policy in Canada   1972: suicide is decriminalized. 1974: the Lalonde Report is released. The report is a health promotion document that recognized suicide as a health issue and highlighted the stigma experienced by suicide survivors. 1985: the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) is established. 1987: the National Task Force in Suicide Prevention releases a report stating the need for identification of at-risk groups and suicide intervention and policy. (Report reinstated in 1994.) 1995: report released investigating suicide rates in Aboriginal Peoples. 2001: appointment of a Suicide Prevention Advisory Group to make recommendations for a National Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy (NAYSPS). 2005: $65 million committed by the federal government to support the NAYSPS. 2006: the Kirby Report is released, examining mental health and potential roles of the federal and provincial governments. 2007: the Mental Heath Commission of Canada (MHCC) is established.
