The palatine aponeurosis, which is an expansion of the ( tensor veli palatini tendons, levator veli palatini tendons, musculus uvulae, palatopharyngeus tendons ), strengthens the soft palate. The palatine aponeurosis is thin posteriorly where it ends in a free margin and thick anteriorly where it attaches to the ( pharynx, hard palate, tongue, palatoglossus muscle ). The ( bone, palatine muscles, connective tissue, palatine aponeurosis ) mainly forms the the anterior part of the soft palate, whereas the posterior part of the soft palate is mainly formed form ( muscle, palatine aponeurosis, bone, connective tissue ). The aponeurosis also serves as a site for muscle attachment for the other palatine muscle

The ( soft, hard ) palate contains taste papillae that are referred to as palate papillae. The palate papillae are morphologically similar to ( filiform papillae, fungiform papillae, foliate papillae, circumvallate papillae ) that are located on the anterior aspect of the tongue. The gustatory function of the soft palate is predominately innervated by the ( lesser palatine nerve, greater petrosal nerve, greater palatine nerve, nasopalatine nerve ). However, some are innervated by the deep petrosal nerve. The soft palate is most sensitive to ( bitter, unami, sour, sweet, salty ) sensation.

Question 27 of 34

1

At week six the ❌ grow inferiorly on either side of the tongue. In week ❌ the palatine shelves rotate and move to a ❌ position above the tongue. The palatine shelves will fuse in the midline and continue to fuse anteriorly and posteriorly. The nasal septum will grow ❌ to fuse with the superior surface of the palate. The fusion of the nasal septum and palate separates the oral cavity and the nasal cavity. Rotation of the shelves is believed to be due to synthesis and hydration of ❌ within the extracellular matrix of the shelves.

During swallowing the soft palate is , separating the oral cavity and the nasal cavity, closing the isthmus. The actions allows the transport of food to the pharynx and prevents food entering the nasal cavity. The main muscle involved in elevation of the soft palate is the muscles. The musculus uvulae will assist in this action.

Explanation

Question 31 of 34

1

Select from the dropdown lists to complete the text.

The ( soft, hard ) palate is lowered and contacts the ( anterior, posterior, medial, lateral ) part of the tongue, closing the ( oropharyngeal, pharyngeal ) isthmus, during ( nasal, non-nasal ) breathing. The ( palatopharyngeus, palatoglossus, levator veli palatini, tensor veli palatini ) is the muscle most active during nasal breathing.

Explanation

Question 32 of 34

1

Select from the dropdown lists to complete the text.

The soft palate is elevated during ( non-nasal, nasal ) sounds so air is expelled only through the ( mouth, nose ). When the soft palate is depressed then this produces ( non-nasal, nasal ) sounds. Hypernasal resonance and nasal emissions occur when there is an inadequate closure of the ( pharyngeal isthmus, oropharyngeal isthmus ) during speech production. The soft palate is generally elevated by the ( tensor veli palatini, levator veli palatini, palatoglossus, palatopharyngeus ) muscles during speech. Elevation of the soft palate is ( lower, high ) during speech than it is during swallowing.

Explanation

Question 33 of 34

1

Problems that can occur in an individual with a cleft palate include weak articulation of consonants. The consonant '❌' appears to be the most common articulation difficulty. Cleft palate patients avoid using ❌ consonants and instead use ❌ consonants. For example, using 'm' instead of 'b'. Omission is another speech problem with cleft palates. Omission of speech is where the ❌ consonant is missed to avoid any nasal emission.

If the cleft palate is accompanied by a cleft lip a lip repair is done first and normally occurs around ( three months, one month, ten months, six months ). At about ( one month to three months, six months to one year, one year to two years, three months to six months ) a cleft palate repair is done. Surgery normally occurs early on to help in feeding and to avoid any speech habits. When the individual is around ( five, ten, one, two ) years of age they will undergo rhinoplasty.
