What is the melting point?
What is the boiling point?
When is a substance a liquid?
When is a substance a gas?
When is a substance a solid?
The graph of ice melting and its key stages.
The structure of an ionic compound.
Ionic compounds have a very high melting and boiling points but why?
Ionic compounds are insulators of electricity when they are solid. Why?
Ionic compounds are conductors of electricity when molten (melted) or in solution. Why?
Why are Ionic compounds hard?
Why do atoms form chemical bonds?
What are the two types of bonding?
What takes place in ionic bonding?
Note to self
Ions and their formula.
Note to self.
Examples of diagrams.
What is cation?
What is anion?
What is covalent bonding?
Dot and cross diagrams for covalent bonds
Rules.
Examples
What is a molecule?
Simple covalent molecules have low melting a boiling points.
Why?
Large molecules have higher boiling points than small molecules.
Why?
Simple covalent molecules such as pure water do not conduct electricity.
Why?
Giant covalent structures
What holds the atoms together in giant covalent structures?
why do giant covalent substances like diamond have very high melting points?
Graphite can be used to lubricate the moving parts of machinery because it is soft and slippery. Why?
Why is graphite a good conductor of electricity?
Why do
diamonds not conduct electricity?
Diamonds can be used on the tips of drill bits. Why is it so hard?
What is graphene and how was it discovered?
What properties does graphene have?
Why does graphenes properties make it useful?
What is buckminster fullerenes chemical formula?
What are fullerenes used for?
What is the stucture of fullerenes?
Why are nanotubes strong but light weight?
What are the uses of carbon nanotubes?
Why do carbon nanotubes conduct electricity and heat?
What are the properties of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes?
Why are pure metals soft and easily bent into shape?
Why are alloys much harder and stronger than pure metals?
Why is gold jewellery often made from alloys of gold rather than pure gold?
What is the structure of metals?
Why do metals conduct heat and electricity?
Why do metals have high melting points?
What type of compound is calcium oxide?
Describe the structure and bonding in sillicon dioxide and explain why it is a suitable material for making welding blankets.
