A Narrow Fellow in the Grass describes the movements of the snake in a weird way - it "rides" through the grass, refers to the snake as "a narrow fellow" or just "this fellow" never as a snake- then refers generally to is as "he" and "him"  - opening lines humanises the snake but does not endear it to us. narrow = unpleasant and suggest shadiness. elusive - appearing suddenly and vanishing again. overall affect renders the snake strange and remote. poor relationship. terrible fear. difficulty breathing "and zero and the bone" freezing sensation.  attitude to the rest of the natural world, cool and formal., she knows several of "natures people" but she feels little more than a "transport/of cordiality" - the other ness of nature - keep our distance - merely cordial neighbours - danger of natural world - scared of snake - more sinister element - hard to know when it will appear and what it will do. conversational tone run on lines show the energy and movement of the snake fellow - familiar - yet scared of it sibilence "spotted shaft is seen" repition of s sounds is fitting for the snake - grass, occasionally rides, sudden is snake as a metaphor for her relationships? for her fears?
