Hardware: The machinery, physical parts of a computer

Software: The program instructions that make the computer do something.

Program: Listing of instruction for computer to follow written in computer language

Hardcopy: a paper printout of the program code or data displayed on the screen.

Softcopy: a copy of the program stored in the computer

Network: A group of computers that linked together.

Control unit: The unit inside of the CPU makes decisions.

Machine Language: Lowest of computer languages where instructions are given by numeric code

High level Language: A computer language which is easily read by humans - the code consists of English words.

Object Code: The machine code version of the source program

Complier: Converts the source code of a program to machine language placing the results

Interpreter: Converts a program one line at a time into machine language.

Input: The transferring of information into a computer system - typing source

Processing: Manipulation and control of information within the computer system. Manipulation is controlled by the control unit, ALU and tempory memory.

Storage: Information permantely saved

Output: The displaying of information.

Byte - 8 bits

Kilobyte - approximately 1000 bytes (1024)

Megabyte- approximately 1000000m

Gigabyte- approximately a billion bytes

Terabyte- approximately a trillion bytes

Petabyte - approximately a quadrillion bytes3.

Comments: messages to the reader of the code.
