- No alcohol and strenuous physical exercise prior 6 hours - 3Causes to increase resting/pre-exercise heart rate1. Anxiety
2. Smoking
3. Caffeine
4. Dehydration - 4How to measure resting heart rate1. subject seated
2. stethoscope placed on sternum/2nd intercostal space
3. Count 15 seconds and x 4 - 5Blood pressure- The driving force that moves blood through the circulatory system
- The force that blood exerts on the walls of blood vessels by the contraction of the heart - 6Mean blood pressureIt is the average pressure driving blood into the tissues throughout the cardiac cycle
- 7Why is Pmean not just the average of systolic and diastolic pressure?Because the mean arterial pressure drops more quickly during the first phase of the cardiac cycle
- 8Equation for Pmeandiastolic pressure + (1/3 pulse pressure)
- 9Equation for pulse pressuresystolic pressure - diastolic pressure
- 10Procedure to measure Blood Pressure1. Cuff to the left arm and lower margin 2-3 cm above antecubital space. Arm 0 - 45 º from trunk
2. Locate brachial artery. Inflate cuff 20-30 mmHg above radial palpatory pressure. Put stethoscope in brachial artery. Release cuff.
3. 1st sound systolic. 2nd sound diastolic
