- 1Describe the colour, shape and location of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is red/brown, 25-30g and in the neck, anterior to the parathyroid glands and posterior to the thyroid cartilage.
- 2What is the thyroid follicle and what is its function? The thyroid follicle is like a small tube with a lumen and a thin epithelium which contains colloid. Colloid contains thyroglobulin which is the precursor for thyroid hormones.
- 3What are the functions of T3 and T4?Both T3 and T4 are involved in the regulation of metabolism and the control of growth.
- 4Of T3 and T4 which is the most active and which is the most abundant?T3 is more biologically active and T4 is more abundant
- 5How are thyroid hormones synthesised?Thyroglobulin is synthesised in the RER and glycosylated in the Golgi apparatus. TSH binds to TSH receptor causing uptake of iodine by the Na+/I- symporter. The thyroglobulin is then iodinated by thyroperoxidase (TPO) which also couples iodotyrosine residues together. The hormones are then transported to the colloid.
- 6How are thyroid hormones transported in the blood?Thyroid hormones are transported in the blood bound to portines. The main one is thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) but also transthyretin and albumin. 0.03% of T4 is free and 0.3% of T3 is free.
