There main concern was boys and that they grew up not knwoing that their role was to find a wife and support their family.
Families are not just changing they are detoriating. - 17MarxismReject the view that the family ahs a value consensus. (conflict view)
they see a conflict between the subject class and the ruling class
- the family is shaped by the requirements of capitalism - 18The family is needed to:- provide emotional support for workers who have been exploited by the system
- reproudce labour power (future workers)
- teach their children to accept the ineqaulities of the ruling class and to believe that it is fair and just. - 19EngelsBelieved that nuclear families were developed as a means for passing on private property to heirs.
They wanted to pass on their inheritance to keep the wealth in the family. - 20AlthusserArgued that in order for capitalism to survive the working class must submit to the ruling class. He suggested the family is one way of passing on the ideolgy and beliefs that it is fair and just.
- 21Zaretsky - Safety valveMen are exploited in the workplace so they go back home to the family which is a comforting device, which enables them to face their work the next day (could be crticised for being outdated)
- 22EvaluationAlthough some sociologists agree with their findings they think that the family is hardly shaped by the means of the system.
They ignore family diveristy
Too critical
-Nuclear family predates capitalism
-Patriarchal nature of family (outdated?) - 23Radical PsychiatryThis emerged in the 1960s and 1970s and it takes a CRITICAL view of family life, particularly the nuclear family.
- 24LeachArgues that the nuclear family is too isolated and lacks the support of the extended family. This puts too much pressure on the parents who lack emotional support and often take out their anger and frustration on each other and their children.
- 25LaingArgues that the family can cause mental illness such as stress, depression and anxiety because parents and children spend too much time together. Parents expect too much from their children and makes children feel suffocated.
- 26CooperTakes a more marxist approach to the family and focuses particularly on how children are treated. He argues that parents teach children to be obedient, so when they go to work they are easily controlled. Parents make children aim at getting 'respectable' jobs, and any dreams are stamped upon.
- 27Evaluation (radical psychiatry)Accused of taking too negative a view on the family. Leach ignores the contacts that are maintained between the nuclear and extended family. Laing has been criticised for overstating their case the link between mental illness and the family, Cooper is too critical of the relationship between most parents and their children. FUNCTIONALSIT would be critical of them ignoring the positive aspects of the family.
- 28Young and WillmottThe symmetrical family:
1. it is nuclear
2. It is home centered and privatised: family life is focused on the home. Husbands and wife look to each other for companionship.
3. It is symmetrical - the roles of husbands and wife are increasingly similar. - 29Introduction- A budget of 7.5 million
