  1. 1LANLocal Area Network
network in a single building or several buildings
  2. 2WANWide Area Network
    i.e banks,college/university campuses
for all access to the same data
  3. 3MANMetro Area Network
usually covers a network within the same city
  4. 4PANPersonal Area Network
set up privately for a few people to connect a small number of devices together
  5. 5VPNVirtual Private Network
two physical networks connected by another connection generally the internet
  6. 6Physical TopologyThe physical layout of devices on a network and how the cables and wires connect these devices.
  7. 7Logical TopologyHow data is transmitted and received between devices on a network regardless of their physical connections.
  8. 8TopologyThe way in which the devices (nodes) are connected.
  9. 9NodeA device that is connected to the network.
  10. 10Example of nodesComputers, printers, hubs, switches and routers.
  11. 11Physical bus topoloyAll nodes are connected to a single backbone. the back bone is a single wire that carries data packets to the nodes. terminators must be installed at the two ends of the back bones.
  12. 12Advantages of bus topologiesLess cable required than in other topologies.
  13. 13Disadvantages of bus topologiesUnable to accommodate a large number of nodes - such as those required for LAN'S a single break in the back bone disables the entire network
  14. 14Physical ring topologyEach node connects to exactly two other nodes, forming a complete ring, which generally circulates data packets in one direction. each node receives data from one node and transmits to the other.
  15. 15Advantages of ring topologiesThere are dirty jokes that can be made about it...... if you're feeling particularly inventive.
  16. 16Disadvantages of ring topologiesIf one cable is broken the entire network if disabled, to remove or add a node, the entire network must be stopped. all nodes must be powered at all times if the network is to operate.
  17. 17Mesh topologyThese include more that one physical path between pairs of nodes. routers are required for mesh topologies.
  18. 18Advantage of mesh topologiesFault tolerance, as packages are automatically routed around around faults. can be used in high-speed long distance connections.
  19. 19Disadvantages of mesh topologiesRouters are required to direct each data packet.
  20. 20Physical star topologyAll nodes connect to a central node via their own dedicated cable. the central node is the device that connects all outlying node such that they can transmit and receive packets to and from each other node.
  21. 21Advantages of star topologiesEach node has its own cable and can be connected and disconnected without affecting any other nodes. mew nodes can be easily added without first disabling the network. the process of identifying faults is made more simple.
  22. 22Disadvantages of star topologiesA lot of cabling is required, if a fault occurs in the central node then all connected nodes are also disabled.
