Stress a feeling of pressure around events, circumstances or situations
Internal Stressor A stress that comes from your own thinking (wanting to do well, worrying about what others think, etc.)
External Stressor A stress from the outside world (school, home, friend drama, etc.)
Alarm Stage "Fight or Flight"; body increases heart and breathing rate, slows digestion, blood sugar increases, etc.
Resistance Stage The body tries to restore balance, or equilibrium. It's successful if the stress goes away; if it doesn't, you move to the next stage.
Exhaustion Stage Stress is constant, so your body can't adapt. You can become ill (skin and digestion problems, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and mental disorders like anxiety and depression.
Positive Ways to Cope with Stress -Healthy Choices -Get support -Understand your feelings -Find ways to relax -Keep a sense of humor -Take action when you can -Figure out how to eliminate or prevent in the future
Endorphins "Feel good" chemicals released by your brain when you exercise. Help you cope with stress and sleep more soundly.
Deep Breathing When you breathe slowly and deeply, it tells your brain to calm down. Counter acts effects of "Flight or Fight."
Progressive Muscle Relaxation Tense different muscle groups, one at a time, and then let them relax. Tension helps the muscles relax more deeply.
Guided Imagery Picture a calm place, and imagine a restful experience. Take a mental vacation.
Time Management A lot of stress can be avoided if you learn how to make the best use of your time and be organized.
Physical Activity 30 minutes of aerobic activity releases endorphins from your brain.
Talking about it / Get Support Maybe you just need someone to listen, maybe you need advice. Either way, having support can make our stressful burdens seem lighter.
