covalent bond
Fichas del conjunto (3)
- 1what is a covalent bondit's sharing electrons. they have no charge therefore they can't conduct electricity
- 2describe a simple molecular substaanesimple molecular substance- has low melting point since it has a weak intermolecular force.gas liquid and solid are in room temperature.because it has no ions/charge it cant conduct electricity or carry electrical current.
- 3describe a giant covalent structurethey are hard. they don't conduct electricity except graphite. they have high melting point.examples are:
diamond- each carbon atom form 4 covalent bond. they are hard because they have a rigid network. they have a high melting point since they have a strong bond. they don't conduct electricity since they have no free electron.
graphite: each carbon atom form 3 covalent bond. they have a high melting point since they have a strong covalent bond. they are soft and slippery because the layers can slide over each other.they are free to move meaning that they have a delocalised electron therefore they are a good conductor of electricity.
silicon dioxide: (sand) is a giant structure of silicon and oxygen
