What is the name of the fascia in the neck that ensheaths the strap and SCM musles but is deep to platysma? Investing fascia.
What are the three major compartments in the neck? What are the fascial layers surrounding them called? Vertebral --> prevertebral fascia Visceral --> Pretracheal fascia Vascular --> carotid sheath
Which facial muscle is responsible for the look of horror? What nerve innervates it? Platysma. Facial nerve (VII)
What is another name used for the strap muscles? Infrahyoid muscles.
What is the function of the strap muscles? Positioning larynx and trachea in neck. Depression of hyoid after swallowing.
What are the primary venous channels of the superficial neck? External jugular and anterior jugular veins.
What two veins come to together posterior to the angle of the mandible to for the external jugular vein? Posterior auricular vein and retromandibular vein.
Which vein does the external jugular vein drain into? The subclavian vein.
A - submental triangle B - Submandibular triangle C - muscular triangle D - carotid triangle
What structures make up the borders of the anterior triangle? Anterior edge of SCM laterally. Inferior border of mandible superiorly. Midline of neck medially.
Name the four suprahyoid muscles. Stylohyoid, digastric (anterior and posterior bellies), mylohyoid, geniohyoid.
Stylohyoid. Facial nerve.
Mylohyoid inferiorly and geniohyoid on top.
What's the origin, insertion and innervation of the geniohyoid muscle? Origin - inferior mental spine on inner surface of mandible. Insertion - body of hyoid Innervation - branch from anterior ramus of C1
Name the four infrahyoid/strap muscles. Sternohyoid, omohyoid, sternothyroid, thyrohyoid.
What is the function of the infrahyoid muscles? Where do they insert? Function - depress hyoid after swallowing. Insert - hyoid bone
What is the innervation of the SCM? Spinal accessory nerve.
What provides the innervation to the infrahyoid muscles? The ansa cervicalis.
Thyrohyoid muscle. Origin - thyroid cartilage Insertion - hyoid bone
Where does the common carotid artery originate on the left and right? Right - from brachiocephalic trunk Left - from aorta
Where in the neck does the common carotid artery bifurcate? What does it bifurcate into? Bifurcates at superior border of thyroid cartilage into external carotid and internal carotid arteries.
From superior to inferior: Maxillary, occipital, ascending pharyngeal, superior thyroid
What are the two terminal branches of the ECA? Maxillary and superficial temporal arteries.
Name the four nerves which pass through the anterior triangle? Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX), Facial nerve (VII), Vagus nerve (X), Accessory nerve (XI)
Vagus nerve (X)
Which two vessels supply the thyroid gland? Superior thyroid artery from the ECA. Inferior thyroid artery from thyrocervical trunk (from subclavian).
Name the two smaller triangles of the posterior triangle of the neck. Occipital triangle superiorly and omoclavicular or subclavian triangle inferiorly
What structures form the borders of the posterior triangle of the neck? Anterior border - posterior edge of SCM Posterior border - anterior edge of trapezius Inferior border - middle third of clavicle
What is the origin of the SCM? Origin of sternal head - upper part of anterior surface of manubrium Origin of clavicular head - superior surface of medial third of clavicle
What is the insertion of the SCM? Insertion of sternal head - lateral half of super nuchal line Insertion of clavicular head - lateral surface of mastoid process
Which two major vessels pass through the posterior triangle? External jugular vein and subclavian
What nerve passes through the posterior triangle? It also innervates trapezius and SCM. Spinal accessory nerve (XI)
