- 1What is a 'brownfield' site ?An area of land that has already been developed on
- 2What are the benefits of developing on a 'brownfield' site ?1) Because the site has been previously developed on, this may mean less energy is needed to develop the site.
2) Provision of services might already be in place.
3) Less 'greenfield' sites are used = more green spaces - 3What does orientation mean ?The direction a building faces
- 4What is the most sustainable orientation of a building within the UK and why ?South - because it gets the maximum amount of natural light, this reduces the need to use as much electricity / heating
- 5What does prefabricated mean ?pre = before
fabricated = made
prefabricated refers to elements of the construction that can be completed off site - 6Why is using prefabricated elements a sustainable method ?Because they are built in a factory offsite, they can be made highly accurately, this reduces the amount of waste produced, it also means overall construction time is reduced
- 7What is 'embodied energy' ?The energy needed to produce a material from extraction to its point of use
- 8Would raw materials have higher or lower embodied energy than recycled materials ?higher - due to the energy cost needed to extract it from the earth.
- 9Explain how material choice can effect the sustainability of a construction methodMaterials are chosen based on their ability to do something well (material properties)
Some choices will be more sustainable than others and may have a lower embodied energy e.g thermal insulation = sheep's wool vs foam
