What is noise? Increased uncertainty.
On average how much information can one nerve transmit? What is this rate determined by? 164 bits/sec, the rate is determined by the maximum rate of nerve firing.
How can we transmit a larger range of information about an area of our body? Using parallel nerves with overlapping ranges
What does myelination do the nerve in terms of resistance and therefore the time constant? Increases the Rm and decreases the resistance of Cm. This alone would have no effect on the time constant however myelination causes salutatory conduction therefore speeding up conduction.
What ion is destabilizing and what ion is stabilizing and explain what this means? Na+ is a destabilizing ion meaning the more that is released the faster the rate of release will become i.e. positive feedback control. Stabilizing ions would be K+ as more enters the cell the slower the entry rate becomes, i.e. it is controlled by negative feedback.
