8.1 The Agricultural Revolution
When did the agricultural evolution begin? About 1760
What caused an explosion in industrial output? -Population growth - Innovations in technology -Increase in world trade.
What was the enclosure system? a process lasting from the 1500s to the 1800s in which formerly common farms are enclosed
What happened to tenant farmers? They were generally evicted.
What was another important factor in promoting change in agriculture? Technological breakthrough
What was the seed drill and how did this change agriculture? It was a tube-like device that poked into the ground; this improved the efficiency immensely as you don't waste as much seeds.
How did fertilizer affect agriculture? It led to the invention of more effective synthetic fertilizer.
What was superphosphate? It was the first commercially available fertilizer; it was incredibly rich in phosphate.
What was the threshing machine? It was a combine harvester which was capable of cutting stalks, separating grain, and many more at the same time.
What were the swing riots and what was the reason for it? It was a riot from agricultural workers who lost their job due to the threshing machine overtaking them.
How did authorities respond to the swing riots? They responded to them by hanging 9 of their members (hence the name swing riots) and transporting 450 of them to Australia.
8.2 The Beginning of the Industrial Revolution
What provided the energy for Britain's homes for thousands of years? They used wood
What problem occurred in 1700s? Forests were shrinking.
What was the advantage of coal? It provided approx. three times as much energy as wood.
Why was coal not widely used? It was hard to dig out
What was the problem with using horse powered pumps to drain water from? They could only dig 30 metres deep
What was the advantage of the steam engine in comparison to the horse powered pumps? They could go hundreds of metres and could do it multiple times as fast.
What was the advantage of using coal in Britain? There were plenty of coal in Britain
Why was Britain able to lead the world into the industrial age? It is because they have a large supply of cheap energy
What was the age of reason? The age where many discoveries was made about this world
What was another name for the age of reason? The enlightenment
What were some of the scientific discoveries made during this period? They found out the world wasn't flat
What did society begin to question during the enlightenment? Religious beliefs.
