  1. 1autonomic nervous system and neuromuscular systemautonomic system: regulates function of internal organs and controls some of our skeletal muscles
neuromuscular system: nervous system and the muscles work together to allow movement
  2. 2what is the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system?they help the neuromuscular system to prepare the body for exercise
sympathetic: prepares for exercise (fight or flight response)
parasympathetic: relaxes body slows down energy functions
  3. 3what are slow twitch fibres?-slower contraction speed then fast twitch
-better adapted for low intensity exercise e.g long distance
    produce energy aerobically
  4. 4what are fast twitch fibres?-greater force of contraction
    -fatigue quickly
    -produce energy anaerobically
-Type llA: more resistant to fatigue, longer burst of energy
-Type llB: fatigue quickly, quick short bursts of energy
  5. 5effect of training on fibre typehypertrophy: muscle becomes bigger and stronger
meaning muscle fibre size increases if muscle undergoes hypertrophy
  6. 6the motor unit-consists of motor neurone and its muscle fibres
-only one muscle fibre type can be in one motor unit
-muscle fibres work with nervous system so contraction can occur
  7. 7the all or none law-once motor neurone stimulates muscle fibres either all of them contract or none
-minimum amount of stimulation (threshold) is required to start contraction
-if sequence of impulses meet this threshold then all contract if not none do
  8. 8what is wave summation?when there is a repeated nerve impulse with no time to relax so a smooth, sustained contraction occurs rather than twitches creating a tetanic contraction
  9. 9what is spatial summation?when the strength of a contraction changes by altering the number and size of the muscle units
  10. 10what is PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation)-advanced stretching technique
    -also increases range of motion
-CRAC technique is the most common
  11. 11what is the role of muscle spindles (proprioceptor) in pnfprovide info to CNS about how fast and far a muscle is being stretched. CNS then sends an impulse back to muscle telling it to contract. Triggers stretch reflex preventing over stretching
  12. 12what is the role of Golgi tendon organs (proprioceptor) in pnfthey detect levels of tension in a muscle. When muscle contracted isometrically in PNF they sense increase in muscle tension and sned inhibitory signals to brain allowing antagonist muscle to relax and lengthen (aka autogenic inhibitation)
