William Harvey In 1628, he published his book which proved that arteries carried blood away from the heart and veins away from the heart. He disproved Galen's theory
Andreas Vesalius Dissected criminals which allowed him to draw the body in detail. He also disproved more of Galen's theory by proving that the human jawbone is made from 1 bone, not 2 as Galen said.
Thomas Sydenham He made observations on his patients to identify links that the symptoms were the causes of one disease. He discovered scarlet fever.
Royal Society Scientists wanted to talk to each other about their new discoveries ans share new ideas . This led to the founding of the Royal Society.In 665, they published their first scientific journal, called Philosophical Transactions.
Printing Press In the 1440's, Johannes Gutenberg created the world's first printing press. Before the printing press, monks and nuns during the medieval era had to hand-write books so they were inaccurate and only wrote religious beliefs. The press enabled information to be led quickly.
Florence Nightingale She believed in the miasma theory so she encourage sanitary, ventilation and cleanliness in hospitals which reduced the chance of infection. She helped in the Crimea War (1854) and after she set up nursing school in 1860 and trained other nurses.
John Snow Snow observed cholera during the epidemic of 1848-49. Cholera couldn't be transmitted by a miasma, because it affected the guts, not the lungs. Also he suggested that drinking water was being contaminated by the cholera-ridden faeces being disposed of in the city's drains.
Edward Jenner In 1796, Jenner infected a boy, James Phipps, with cowpox. 6 weeks later, he attempted to infect James with Small pox, but James did not get it. He discovered vaccinations.
Louis Pasteur He discovered the Germ Theory in 1861. He disproved Spontaneous Generation.
Robert Koch He developed a new method of growing them, using agar jelly in a petri dish.
