  1. 1Define ProjectionTo transmit light over various distances through air, in a controlled fashion
  2. 2How do spot lights operateThey take light emitted from a strong point source and redirect/concentrate that light using a Parabolic Reflector
  3. 3Difference between Spot Light and Flood LightA flood light moves the light source slightly off the precise focus of the mirror to disperse the light more
  4. 4What kind of mirror would you use to take all the light and project it onto a single point.Ellipsoidal Mirrors
  5. 5Types of car headlights1)
    2)
    3)
  6. 6Lens used in light housesFresnel Lenses
  7. 7How are fresnel lenses for lighthouses classified? They have SIX ORDERS. First being the largest and sixth being the smallest
  8. 8How do Overhead (Transparency) Projectors work? They still use the same basic layout of lamp, mirror and lenses, with the addition of one extra mirror to turn the upward projected image through 90 degrees. The condenser lens is usually of the Fresnel type to reduce weight and thickness.
  9. 9How do digital projects work?Digital Light Processing (DLP)
  10. 10Digital Light Processing (DLP)A DMD chip with 1.3 million hinge-mounted microscopic mirrors corresponding to one pixel in a projected image. A signal, light source, projection lens, and its mirrors can reflect an all-digital image onto a screen.
  11. 11What is a DMD?The DMD is a MEMS (Micro ElectroMechanical System) device, where mechanical movements are created and controlled by electrostatic charges. The mirrors are mounted on tiny hinges that enable them to tilt ± 10° either toward the light (ON) or away from it (OFF).
  12. 12What is DLP Color?1) Light generated by the lamp in a DLP is reflected via a ellipsoidal mirror through a RBG color wheel before falling on the surface of the DMD chip.
    2) With 3DLP technology, three separate DMD chips are used, each dedicated to one of the three primary colors. (Used in movies and is more expensive)
  13. 13Types of Digital Light Projection Technologies1: DLP (Digital Light Processing)
    2: LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
3: LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon)
  14. 14LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)Usually contain three separate LCD panels, RBG components of the image. As light passes through the LCD panels, individual pixels can be opened or closed to allow light to pass, thus it is a transmissive technology.
  15. 15LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon)A hybrid between LCD and DLP. Liquid crystals are applied to a reflective mirror substrate. As the liquid crystals open and close, the light is either reflected from the mirror below, or blocked.
  16. 16Heads-Up Display (HUD)Light entering through a windshield will strike the top of the dashboard. Depending on the reflectance of the dashboard material, and on the relative angle between dashboard and windshield, an image of the dashboard can reflect back off the glass.
  17. 17What car has an advanced heads up display?Cadillac Deville: The system uses an IR sensitive camera mounted in the front radiator grill, a small system controller, and a HUD unit on top of the dashboard.
