Investigating populations
  1. A truly representive sample should be;
    1. taken at random to ensure that every meneber of the population has an equal chance of being selected
      1. Unbiased by the sampling equipment or method uses
        1. large enough to provide a sufficiently precise estimate of the population
        2. Random sampling is designed to ensure that individual organisims at each point within the study area have an equal chance of being sampled
          1. Transect sampling
            1. Line transect - a tape of string is laid along the ground in a straight line between two poles to indicate the limit of the transect. Sampling is confined strictly to recording all organisms actually touching the line
              1. Belt transect - is a strip of chosen width through the habitat. It is made by laying to parallel, between which all individuals are recorded
                1. Continuous transect - is a line or belt transect in which the whole line or belt is sampled. interupted transect, samples are taken at points along the line or belt transect
                2. Percentage cover, the proportion of an area covered by the growth form of a plant or by sedentary animal
                  1. Percentage cover = hits X100/hits +misses
