operations with polynomials

operations with polynomials

1. classification of polynomials

   • naming polynomials by degree
     • degree of term
       • sum of exponents
     • degree of polynomial
       • equal to the degree of the term with the highest degree
   • naming polynomials by the number of terms they contain
     • 1 term = monomial
     • 2 terms = binomial
     • 3 terms = trinomial
     • 4 or more terms = polynomial

2. simplifying polynomials

   • BEDMASS
   • combine like terms
     • add or subtract coefficients
   • powers
     • multiplication - add exponents
       • multiply numerical coefficients then multiply variables and put them together
     • division - subtract exponents
       • monomial by monomial = divide coefficients and then use law of exponents
       • polynomial by monomial = each term of the polynomial is divided by the monomial

3. multiplication using distributive property
