1. FIRST: define a remote interface

   • this specifies the available methods
     • extend java.rmi.Remote
       • java.rmi.RemoteException

2. SECOND: define a class that implements theinterface

   • extend java.rmi.server.UnicatRemoteObject
     • this class has a parameterless constructor
       • constructor can throw a RemoteException

3. THIRD: create the server application

   • this requires an RMI registry
     • remote object is exported

4. RMI is a synchronous protocol

   • sockets and streams allow asynchronous
     • RMI unsuitable for data-intensive communication
