        2. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition in which excess fat is stored in the liver with the absence of significant alcohol intake.
          1. Risk factors
            1. Obesity, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertriglyceridemia, Surgery (Jejunoileal Bypass), Medications (Corticosteroids, Estrogens, Amiodarone), Exposures to organic solvents.
            2. Signs & Symptoms
              1. Elevation of serum transaminases, fatigue, malaise, right upper quadrant discomfort.
                1. Most are asymptomatic
                2. Causes
                  1. Metabolic syndrome
                    1. defined as having at least two of the following: obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension
                  2. Investigation
                    1. Waist to hip ratio (WHR)
                      1. Physical examination
                        1. Complete blood count
                          1. Lipid profile
                            1. AST and ALT enzymes
                              1. X-Ray of abdomen
                              2. Complications
                                1. cirrhosis, liver failure,  liver cancer, edema and ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, hepatopulmonary syndrome, hypersplenism, bacterial peritonitis.
