BUILDING STRUCTURE
1. Some buildings have built in computer controlled cable tensioning systems
2. Many households have earthquake kits.
3. Buildings have inner and outer walls.
4. Modern skyscrapers are now built with steel frames that can sway during an earthquake.
5. Many buildings have shock absorbers built in.
INFRASTRUCTURE
1. Main road bridges have been improved and strengthened.
2. A rescue and emergency centre with a heliport has been created at an old air base.
3. Fire breaks have been built by demolishing buildings.
4. Emergency water tanks and electricity generators have been installed in each district.
5. The city made an earthquake plan together in the 1980's

EDUCATION
1. Schools do regular earthquake drills.
2. People are advised not to store things on high shelves.
3. Every September 1st is Japan's 'Disaster Day' and people practise earthquake drills.
4. Children are taught the earthquake drills: drop, cover and hold on.
