Layers of the Earth

1. OUTER CORE

   • Surround the inner core
   • Liquid layer
   • Made up of iron and nickel
   • Extremely hot, with temperature similar to the inner core

2. INNER CORE

   • The centre of the Earth
   • Hottest part of the Earth
   • Solid and made up of iron and nickel
   • Temperatures of up to 5,500 degrees celcius
   • Immense heat energy

3. MANTLE

   • Widest section of the Earth
   • Thickness of approximately 2,900 km
   • Made up of semi-molten rock called magma
   • In the upper parts of the mantle the rock is hard
   • Lower down the rock is soft and beginning to melt

4. CRUST

   • Outer layer of the earth
   • Thin layer between 0-60 km thick
   • Solid rock layer upon which we live
   • Continental crust is primarily made up of silica and alumina called the "sial"
