Network security threats

  1. system security = protection for system, networks and data.

    • protects from malicious software and prevents data from being stolen
    • protects from cyberattacks and unauthorised access
  2. Forms of attack

    • Passive attack(data is monitored)
    • active attack(Data's modified-malware)
    • Inside attack(someone in organisation)
    • Outside attack(from external user
  3. System security threats

    • Brute force attack(all password combinations used systematically)
    • Denial of service attack(deliberately overloaded with unnecessary requests making network not run properly)
    • Distributed DOS( when unnecessary requests come from numerous sources so you cant just block a single IP address
    • Structure query language injection(putting details into a website and then someone either deletes these details or change them)
    • Malware(developed software made to damage, disrupt or take control of computer systems)
    • social engineering(manipulation into people giving them private details
  4. Types of malware

    • computer viruses(can replicate and transfer to other computer systems, they are often email attachments or other attachments that look very real)
    • trojan(acts as legitimate software, it allows unauthorised backdoor access)
    • spyware(records activity on computer such as keystrokes so it can gain all your passwords and other important data, also can be used on webcams and microphones)
    • adware( popups and banners installed onto actual system, not dangerous but does slow down performance)
    • worms(spread like viruses but dont need humans to spread so just as deadly)
  5. types of social engineering

    • blagging/pretexting(fraudsters make up scenarios to con victims into revealing something they normally wouldn't)
    • Phishing(send an email or message as someone important-bank- which lures them into giving details)
    • pharming(fake websites, for example you may go to a fruad shopping website and put in your details to buy something but it is not real)
    • shoulder surfing(when using ATM's people will look at your card details
