Examples of Proteins
  1. Conjugated Proteins
    1. ions and non-protein molecules attached to them
      1. when the attachment is a requirement it is called a prosthetic group.
        1. active complex = holoenzyme and protein alone = apoenzyme.
          1. carbohydrate attachments
            1. amino acids serine or threonine or asparagine
          2. Extracellular matrix proteins
            1. elongated and fibrous
              1. dense connective tissue is made of collagen.
                1. Collagen
                  1. first made as procollagen = three helices wound round each other
                    1. after assembly procollagen is cleaved together to form tropocollagen
                      1. tropocollagen = left handed helix
                      2. proline and lysines are hydroxylated after synthesis. This requires vit C and failure results in scurvy.
                        1. stabilising = formation of cross links between lysines at the end of tropocollagen
