Cooperative Learning

1. What is?

   • It is an instructional strategy of small teams of students
     • For what reason?
       • To work together to maximize their individual and collective learning

2. What are the objectives?

   • Cooperate and work with each other to successfully complete the task
     • Understanding of the task is achieved individually

3. What does a cooperative model look like?

   • Everyone is/ need:
     • Responsible for their own learning
       • To cooperate and collaborate.
   • Teams are made:
     • Of high, medium and low academic achieving students
       • Different gender, race, culture, and socioeconomic status.

4. 5 elements:

   • 1. Positive interdependence
     • 2. Individual and group accountability
       • 3. Interpersonal and small group skills
         • 4. Face to face promotive interaction
           • 5. Group processing (Reflection)
             • Students:
               • Communicate openly, freely, respectfully discussing their concerns.
                 • Make decisions about behaviors to continue, to change, or discontinue.
           • Students:
             • Teach each other
               • Checks for one another´s understanding
                 • Promote one another´s success
         • Everyone must:
           • Be able to manage conflicts
             • Be able to make decisions
               • Be able to build trust
       • Everyone must:
         • contribute to the group.
           • help the group reach its goals.
     • Efforts of each team member benefits the individuals as well as the group.
