  1. EPIDEMIOLOGY
    1. viral
      1. bacterial- Streptoccocus pyogenes (most common)
      2. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
        1. bacteria/virus
          1. access the body through the mouth/nose
            1. infiltrate the tonsils ( first line of defense against infection)
              1. production of WBC to fight infection (act as scavenger)
                1. inflammatory cytokines (phospholipase A2)
        2. TREATMENT
          1. severe cases - antibiotics /tonsillectomy
            1. conservative management (mild cases ) - increase water intake, increase rest,
              1. gargle with warm water/salt
                1. humidifier to moisten the air
                  1. pain medication - acetaminophen/ibuprofen
              2. RISK FACTORS
                  1. poor environment
                    1. age-common in children
                      1. low socioeconomic factor
                        1. overcrowding
                        2. DIAGNOSIS
                          1. throat culture
                            1. physical examination
                            2. CLINICAL PRESENTATION
                              1. sore throat
                                1. chills
                                  1. difficulty swallowing
                                    1. fever
                                      1. earaches
                                        1. headaches
                                          1. jaw/neck tenderness
                                            1. tonsils appear red/swollen
                                              1. enlarged tonsils
                                                1. tonsils have white or yellow spots
