RECAP Strategy- Integration

1. Purpose

   • The RECAP strategy helps students integrate their notes, lecture, textbook and course knowledge in order to get a better understanding of the information and aid in long-term retention of the information.

2. R- Review notes, objectives and study guides.

   • After completing unit, section or chapter. Look over course materials for the section, (lecture, powerpoints, homework, example problems, notes, etc,.) look over any information that overlaps between the sections or chapter, this will help the student to recognize key information and get a better understanding the concepts of the chapter.

3. E- Examine information.

   • After reviewing and refreshing your memory using your notes from the chapter, look over your chapter/sections objectives and concepts that are important to the chapter(s) and make sure you've included that information on your notes as well. Mark any objectives that you feel you need more help on and target these objectives when reviewing the chapter(s).

4. C- Consolidate and elaborate.

   • After examining the information in your notes and adding information from the chapters objectives that could most likely be on the test, Look over your information and determine what you still may need a little more time on understanding. Take this information create study cards, study sheet or concept maps to integrate your information with the information from the text book. This will help you connect the objectives visually.

5. A- Asking questions.

   • While looking over your notes, ask yourself questions that will help you further understand the objectives. Use the Bloom's Taxonomy and ask yourself questions that are generally specific and as you answer those ask yourself more questions that gradually get more difficult in order to test your comprehension of the chapter on different levels.

6. P- Processing the answers.

   • Write the answers to your questions from the previous step and write them down on a separate piece of paper and try doing this without looking at your notes. Always check your answers and correct any information that may be incorrect. Divide your answers into groups, put the answers that come easy to you in one pile and the answers you may need to practice a little more in another. This will help with long-term retention of the subject
