Therapeutic Process: -long-term in depth process -“not a quick fix” -Client meets with therapist 3 or more times a week for 5 or more years.

Assumptions about the person: -not helpful for people experiencing serious disorders or long history of unsuccessful treatment attempts.
Assumptions about knowledge:
-Humans are motivated by instincts, called drives. -psychic energy called the id steers behavior toward the satisfaction of unmet needs.
-Freud believed restraints must be placed on the individual through higher order cognitive processes called the ego and superego,
otherwise individuals would respond in animalistic ways and the world would be chaotic.
Social, cultural and spiritual issues: -Freud’s view was through the eyes of a Western, male-dominated society.
-Freud saw women as second class citizens that were “lacking” as compared to males.
-Freud acknowledged the power of sexuality and its potential for abuse
-Freud saw the importance that the external world put on the development of the psyche -imago- idealized image of the loved father = god
-Freud believed religion was used to avoid one’s ultimate fears concerning living and dying.
Consciousness- feelings, thoughts, fantasies and behaviors we are aware of. -motivates the individual -represents a small portion of self
Key Concepts
Unconsciousness -more primitive mind -true motivator of our underlying desires driven by id energy (instincts) -represents a vast portion of all that
Goals:
-to make a greater part of the unconscious conscious
-would enable the individual to gain increased understanding and more control over primitive urges and desires
-to assist the client in seeing the transference relationship the client has created so the client can relate more honestly with the analyst
Outcomes: 60-90% of clients show significant improvement after psychoanalysis
