B1 Chapter 3- Medicine + Drugs

1. Key words

   • Placebo- A substance that looks the same as the real drug, however doesn't contain the active substance
   • A drug- A substance that changes the brain and/or how your body works
   • Double- blind trail- A drug trail when neither the doctor nor the patient knows who has the real drug and who has the placebo
   • Medical- A drug made for medical purposes
   • Recreational- Taken for pleasure
   • Thalidomide- a drug given to pregnant women in the late 50's and early 60's to help with morning fever. However it caused the children to be born with missing limbs
   • Gateway drug- A drug that eventually satisfy the consumers needs. It acts as a gateway to harder more dangerous drugs
   • Performance enhancing- A drug taken by athletes to help them perform to higher standards

2. Drug use

   • Drugs can be taken for medical purposes or recreational purposes
   • Thalidomide was a drug not tested properly as they did not realise it would cause babies to be born with missing limbs
     • However thalidomide can be used to cure some cancers and can also cure leprosy is LED's
   • Drugs which people use for recreation all affect the nervous system but mainly the brain. The legal drugs cause more health problems than the illegal drugs

3. Gateway drugs

   • These are drugs that eventually stops satisfying the consumer, leading to harder drugs
   • Marijuana is considered a gateway drug as people begin using cannabis but after a while get bored and begin using harder drugs

4. Drugs in sport

   • The main drugs used in sport are performance enhancing drugs such as steroids
   • People such as Lance Armstrong used performance enhancing drugs to win gold medals
