- Supports Nurture argument.
- Aim:to investigate similarities and differences across gender roles in different cultures.
- Method: She lived in various tribes in New Guinea for 6 months.
- Results: In the Mundugamor tribes both sexes were masculine. In the
Arapesh tribe both sexes were feminine. In the Tchambuli tribe gender roles
were reversed compared to western society.
- Conclusion: Mead found that gender related behaviours were
not universal suggesting they are not determined by nature but
depend on culture.
- Evaluation: Mead is sometimes critised for being too subjective.
