futuro tense

  1. There are two main ways to express the future. Sometimes they are interchangeable, but often they can have different meanings.

    • Will
      • Will" is an auxiliary modal. It means that it combines with the infinitive of non-modal verbs (in many cases to express the future). "Will" is not variable. It does not change with different people. It has a contracted form 'll, which is used in less formal written texts and in spoken English. "Will" is used to express a prediction.
        • Structure
          • Affirmative Sentences
            • Sujeto + “will” + verbo principal
              • Example:I will see my friends next week
                • He will get ill if he doesn't eat properly.
          • Negative Sentences
            • Sujeto + “will” + “not” + verbo principal.
              • Example:I will not [won’t] call you tonight.(No te llamaré esta noche.)
                • She will not [won’t] arrive late.(No llegará tarde.)
          • Interrogative Sentences
            • “Will” + sujeto + verbo principal?
              • Example:Will you call me tonight?(¿Me llamarás esta noche?)
                • Will they be happy to see you?(¿Estarán felices de verte?)
    • “Going to” equivale a “ir a” en español
      • The use of "going to" to refer to future events suggests a very strong link with the present. The precise moment is not relevant, it is later than now, but the attitude implies that this event depends on something we know about the current situation. "Going to" is used primarily to talk about our plans and intentions, or to make predictions based on current evidence. In everyday discourse, "going to" is often shortened as "gonna", especially in American English, although it is never written that way.
        • Structure
          • Affirmative Sentences
            • Sujeto + verbo auxiliar (to be) + “going to” + verbo principal.
              • Example:I am going to call you tonight.(Voy a llamarte esta noche.)
                • She is going to arrive late.(Va a llegar tarde.)
          • Negative Sentences
            • Sujeto + verbo auxiliar (to be) + “not” + “going to” + verbo principal.
              • Example:I am not going to call you tonight.(No voy a llamarte esta noche.)
                • She is not going to arrive late.(No va a llegar tarde.)
          • Interrogative Sentences
            • Verbo auxiliar (to be) + sujeto + “going to” + verbo principal?
              • Example:Are you going to call me tonight?(¿Vas a llamarme esta noche?)
                • Is she going to arrive late?(¿Va a llegar tarde?)
  2. Differences: The "will" and "going to" forms are used to express the future. The difference between "going to" and "will" is the sense of planning and probability of an action happening. In general, “going to” is used for concrete plans, when we are sure that something is going to happen. 1. “Will” is used with voluntary actions.
