Manometer G5- B

  1. Dead Weight Calibrator

    • Comprises a precision ground piston and cylinder
    • Weights can be added to the piston so that the number of predetermined pressures may be set up within the cylinder.
    • The cylinder is on a baseboard , supported on levelling screws and fitted with a spirit level.
    • The gauge under test is linked to the cylinder connection by a flexible tube.
    • Leakage of water past the piston is taken to waste through connection to a second flexible tube, which is connected to a tapping.
  2. Introduction

    • Fluid mechanics has developed as an analytical discipline from the application of the classical laws of statics, dynamics and thermodynamics, to situation in which fluids can be treated as continuous media.
    • For the purpose of this experiment we will use the Dead Weight Calibrator hydraulic model.
  3. EXPERIMENT A

    • Objective
      • 1. To calibrate a Bourdon type pressure gauge and to determine gauge errors
        • 2. To determine the measurement errors in the reference pressure source used for calibration.
    • Method
      • To calibrate a pressure gauge by applying predetermined pressures generated by loading weights on to a piston of known cross-sectional area
    • Equipment
      • The F1-11 Dead Weight Calibrator
        • Weights
          • Weights-balance
            • Pressure gauge
        • Mass of piston - Mp = 498 g
          • Diameter of piston d = 0.01767 m
    • Theory
      • P = F/A (Pascals)
        • Where: F = Mg --> is the force applied to the liquid in the calibrator cylinder
          • M is the total mass of the system
            • A = ((pi)(d)^2) /4 --> is the area of the piston
    • Equipment Calibration
      • Determine the weight of the individual calibration masses and the weight of the piston
        • Note measurement errors associated with the balance.
    • Taking a set of results
      • 1. Insert the piston and spin it to minimise any friction effects.
        • 2. Note the pressure reading from the gauge
          • 3. Add calibration weights in steps of 0.5 kg
            • 4. Verify the equipment is calibrated, then repeat the above process removing the weights progressively.
    • Processing Results
      • Plot a graph of gauge reading against absolute gauge error and of gauge reading against % gauge error
