1. Proximity and distance between flat forms

   • Different sizes
     • create space or a sense of depth
       • we put the bigger figures in the bottom part of the picture

     • the ones on top are positioned in front and closer to the viewer

2. Transparency

   • the figures behind are seen in a veiled way through the ones in front

3. Contrast

   • In colours
     • We see forms represented in vivid and contrasting colours as being closer, and we see forms in fainter colours as being further away.

4. Chiaroscuro

   • the use of the chiaroscuro is a shading technique for defining the figures
     • This contrast allows observers to perceive relief in a drawing.
