PHRASAL VERBS

1. They are compound verbs that have a different meaning from the original verb, since they are formed with a verb and a grammatical complement, either a preposition, an adverb or both.

   • It is usually made up of two words, or even three. For example: look up to. It is made up of a verb, and two prepositions.
   • Although the verb look literally means to look, being accompanied by these particles makes its meaning vary completely. In this case, it means: admire or respect someone a lot.

         • They always need an object. Separable: verb + object + particle. She tried the sweater on. Inseparable: verb + particle + object. Sarah go up the bedroom.

2. The basic structure of a phrasal verb is: Verb + particle (preposition or adverb)

   • EXAMPLES
     • Brian asked Judy out to dinner and a movie.
       • The woman broke down when the police told her that her son had died.
         • I need to break these shoes in before we run next week.
           • This sad music is bringing me down.
           • Do your coat up before you go outside. It's snowing!
     • I don't care for his behaviour.
       • I cut this ad out of the newspaper.
         • I am counting on you to make dinner while I am out.
           • Check out the crazy hair on that guy!
           • It's a fancy restaurant so we have to dress up.
