Core Science C1 Chemistry
Fundamental Ideas
- An element is a substance consisting of atoms which all have the same number of protons - i.e. the same atomic number.
- The sub-atomic structure of a carbon atom
- A table to show relative charges
- A chemical bond is a mutual attraction between two atoms resulting from a redistribution of their outer electrons.
- An element is an atom or molecule made of a single type of atom. A compound is a molecule made of two or more different elements.
- Atoms
- The overall charge of an atom is 0
- The number of protons in the nucleus is equal to the number of electrons
- All atoms of an element have the same number of protons.
- Atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons
- Atoms are arranged in the modern periodic table in order of their atomic number (proton number)
- Chemical bonding involves either transferring or sharing electrons in the highest occupied energy levels of atoms.
- Elements in group 1 of the periodic table all have similar chemical properties. They all react with non-metal elements to form ionic compounds in which the metal has a single negative charge.
- Elements in group 7 of the periodic table, the halogens have similar chemical properties. They react with alkali metals to form ionic compounds in which the halide ions hhave a single negative charge.
