ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

It is not the operational software, rather a representation that enables software engineer to

1. analyze effectiveness of the design in meeting the requirements

2. consider architecture alternatives (at design stage where changes is still easy)

3. reduce risks associated with construction of software

IMPORTANCE OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

- Representations enable communication between all parties (stakeholders) that are interested in the computer-based system development.

- Architecture highlights the early design decisions that have profound impact on all software engineering work that follows and the success of the system as an operational entity.

- "Architecture constitutes of a relatively small, intellectually graspable mode of how the system is structured and how the components work together" [BAS03].

ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTIONS

IEEE Computer Society proposed IEEE-Std-1471-2000, the recommended practice for architectural description of software-intensive systems:

to establish a conceptual framework and vocab. for use during the design of software architecture.

to provide detailed guidelines for representing an architectural description.

to encourage sound architectural design practices.

ARCHITECTURAL GENRES

Genre: A specific category within the overall system domain.

Within each cat., you will encounter a number of subcategories,

e.g. within genre of buildings, you will encounter the following general styles: houses, condos, apartments, office buildings, warehouses and so on.

within each general style, more specific style might apply. Each style will have a structure that can be described using a set of predictable patterns.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLES

Each style will describe a system category that includes:

constraints

semantic models which enables designers to understand the overall properties of the system by analyzing the known properties of its constituent parts:
