Define the following:
Solution: A homogenous mixture of two or more substances
Solvent: The liquid in which substances are dissolved.
Solute: the substances being dissolved.
Aqueous Solution: A solution where water is used as the solvent.
Soluble: When a solid solute dissolves in a liquid solvent.
Insoluble: When a solid solute does not substantially dissolve in a liquid solvent.
Miscible: when two liquids dissolve in each other.
Immiscible: Two liquids will not dissolve in each other when mixed together.
Solubility: The physical property of a substance that describes how the soluble or insoluble it is.
Saturated: In physical chemistry, saturation is the point at which a solution of a substance text can dissolve no more of that substance and additional amounts of it will appear as a separate phase
Recrystallization: a solvent is needed in which the substance has a low solubility at 0 degrees Celsius but a greater solubility at the boiling point of the solvent. The impure solid is then dissolved the minimum amount of hot solvent. Any insoluble impurities are removed by filtration.
Polar: bond between atoms with different
electronegativities.
Salvation: Solubility of solute in solvent with out undergoing chemical change.
The solute and solvent can be in any 3 states of matter, that is why there are 9 possible solute-solvent combinations.
Solids dissolved in liquids
The majority of solutions encountered tend to have a solid as the solute and a liquid as the solvent.
