What is Linguistics?

• Linguistics is the scientific of language
• what is Language and how is it represented in the mind?
• To understand the changing nature of language, we have to took at psychological issues, such as learning ability and perception, and social factors.

Structure of Language

• According to Douglas, there are different dimensions of language.
• there are:
• Competence and perfomance
• Comprehension and production
• Nature and nurture
• Universal Grammars
• He also indicated that each language structure consists of four different areas:
• Phonology
• Semantics
• Grammar
• Pragmatics

Funtions of Language

• Halliday suggests that the functions of language can be separated in seven areas included;
• Instrumental Function
• Regulatory Function
• Representational Function
• Interactive Function
• Personal Function
• Heuristic Function
• Imaginative Function
