A food chain shows that animals need plants to survive. In turn plants can´t survive without sun.

Every food chain starts with a green plant.

Plants are producers and animals are consumers.

A closer look at food chains

The plant is the producer, trapping energy from the sunlight. The bug and chicken are the first consumers, eating the plant. The boy is the second consumer, eating chicken´s meat.

The arrows in the chain show how energy passes slong the chain from one level to the next.

Most energy in the food you eat ends up as heat when you move, keep warm and breathe.
