Question Answer
Grammar Translation Method The main purpose of learning a foreign language is to be able to read literature written in it. Literary language is superior to spoken language. An important goal is to be able to translate from one language into the other. If students can translate, they are considered successful language learners.
Direct Method The main objective of a lesson is to give students opportunities to use the target language and grammar structure through extensive repetition, and little or no reliance on the L1. It focuses primarily on the oral skills rather than reading or writing. Writing that is done is generally through dictation.
Audiolingual Method Teachers want their students to be able to use the target language (TL) communicatively through scripted dialogues. They believe students need to overlearn the TL, to learn it automatically without stopping to think. Their students achieve this by forming new habits in the TL. The teacher is like an orchestra leader, directing and controlling the language behavior of her students.
Silent Way Method This method is often highly teacher directed. Helping to foster autonomy, the method also exercises initiative and because of that, it also removes the teacher from always being the center of attention, becoming distant at times. This is so that he or she can listen to and work with the students. The teacher speaks, but only when necessary. Otherwise, the teacher gets out of the way so that it is the students who receive the practice in using the language.
Suggestopedia Method The teacher is the authority in the classroom. In order for the method to be successful, the students must trust and respect her. Once the students trust the teacher, they can feel more secure. If they feel more secure, they can be more spontaneous and less inhibited. The goal of this method is to ‘desuggest’ the psychological barriers learners bring with them to the classroom and activate the level of their mind just below the fully-conscious mind.
Total Physical Response (TPR) Method Initially the teacher is the director of all student behavior. The students imitate her non-verbal model. At some point, usually after 10-20 hours of instruction, students will be ‘ready to speak’. At that point individual students will direct the teacher and other students.
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) Method The teacher facilitates communication in the classroom. To do this, he establishes situations likely to promote communication. During the activities he acts as an adviser, answering students’ questions and monitoring their performance. He might make note of their errors to work on them at a later time during more accuracy-based activities.
