Question Answer
A force is best defined as.... A push or pull influence that changes the speed, shape, or direction of an object.
What is the definition of Energy? (It is the ability to...., Is only detected when.....) The ability to do work. Is only detected when it causes a change to matter.
What is the best definition for Mass? The amount of substance. Tells you how many particles you have and is measured in Kg.
What is the best definition of Weight? The force of gravity pulling on a mass. It is a force and is measured in Newtons.
What is the best definition of Gravity? A force of attraction between masses. It is a property of mass and is measured in Newtons.
What is the acceleration caused by Gravity on Earth? in m/s 9.8m/s^2
What is Friction best described as? A force that acts in opposition to the movement of an object and produces heat.
What is 'Work'? Work is the physical effects of energy and is measured in Joules.
How is work calculated? Force X Distance
What is Velocity and how is it measured? Velocity is speed with direction and is measured in m/s
What does The Law Of Conservation Of Energy state? That energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only transferred and transformed.
What is a gravitational force and what does it do? A gravitational force is one to do with gravity and pulls large objects towards it.
What is a support force and what does it do? A support force is an upwards force that a surface exerts on an object which rests on it.
What is a thrust force? A force that pushes an object forward.
What is a resistance/friction force? A resistance/friction force is one that acts in the opposite direction to the movement of an object.
Forces are balanced when.... .... They are the same size and act in the opposite direction.
The Net force acting on something is the sum of... ... All the forces acting on an object.
What are the two situations when forces are said to be balanced on an object? When the object isn't moving. When the object is moving in a straight line at a consistent speed.
What is Newton's first law of motion? A body in motion will remain in motion until an external, unbalanced force acts upon it.
What is Newton's second law of motion? An external, unbalanced force will cause an object to accelerate in the direction of he force.
What is Newton's third law of motion? For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
What is Kinetic Energy? Energy gained from movement. Speed has more of an impact on Kinetic Energy than Mass.
What is Potential Energy? The energy gained by on object, relative to it's position. Both the Mass and Height of an object have an influence on the amount of Potential energy. It is also known as Stored energy.
What is Internal Energy? The sum of all energies in an object and includes the Potential and Kinetic energies, atoms and the stored chemicals.
What is the formula for Potential energy? Ep = mgh (mass x gravity x height)
What is the formula for Kinetic Energy? Ek = 1/2mv^2 (Half mass x velocity squared)
What is Velocity measured in? V = m/s
What is Gravity's measurement? G = 9.8ms^-2
What is Convection? Convection is the transfer of heat through the air.
What is Conduction? Conduction is the transfer of heat through touch, but not necessarily friction.
What is the formula to work out Efficiency? Efficiency = Useful Energy out / Energy In
List 10 DIFFERENT types of energy. Kinetic, Potential, Wave, Light, Nuclear, Gravitational, Chemical, Elastic, Sound, Magnetic.
