Question Answer
Size of a molecule (usually)? 1 nm
Thickness of cell membrane (usually)? 10 nm
size of a Virus? 100 nm
size of a bacteria? 1 um
size of organelles? up to 10 um
size of eukaryotic cells? up to 100 um
How to calculate magnification? length of drawing / length of actual specimen
Explain the importance of the surface area to volume ratio as a factor limiting cell size in terms of the agar cube experiment. the agar cube with the largest surface area and largest volume (i.e the biggest) has the smallest surface area to volume ratio which shows us how a cell could potentially be at risk of "dying" due to many molecules for reaction not being able to reach inside the cell and fuel the reaction
name one therapeutic use of stem cells Bone marrow transplants
explain what are stem cells and where these cells can be found in the body Stem cells have the ability to produce a wide range of cells which means that they are pluripotent. They retain their ability to divide and produce many different cells by cell division and the process of differentiation. For example, one type of stem cells in the bone marrow produce a variety of red and white blood cells.
