Question Answer
Who is a victim? can be victim of spousal abuse, fraud, hoax (feeling helpless & developing a victim mentality) *deciding who's a victim is tied to idea of culpability
How to measure victimization? (1) UCR 2 (2) Self-reported Victimization surveys
GSS reports victimization no reported to police reasons why they weren't reported: 1. not important enough for police (68%) 2. Police cant do anything about it (59%) 3. deal with the matter another way (42%)personal matter (36%) 4. scared offender will want revenge if police are involved (7%)
Profile of Victimization in Canada -most at risk of violent crimes (& theft) are young adults aged 15-24 -other risk factors- household under $20,000, being aboriginal, homosexual
Victimization -women more likely to report sexual assault at a rate that is double of males -majority of these assault (81%) involve less serious forms (unwanted touching) -the remainder (19%) are sexual attacks which involve threats of physical violence
Reactions to Victimization GSS indicate the most common emotion consequence is anger (34%), followed by being upset, confused, frustrated (22%) and being annoyed (14%) -common reaction is fear & stress (PTSD)
Rape Trauma Syndrome unique set of PTSD symptoms that have been linked to victims who have survived more severe experiences of sexual assault
Victim Precipitation problematic assumption that victims can somehow influence or bring about their own victimization by exhibiting behaviours that provoke a victimizer
Helen Eisenberg identified 5 major issues with victim blaming 1. victims are no different from non-victims (except victimization) 2. victims are either guilty or totally innocent (problematic) 3. the insinuation that victims hold blame for their victimization suggests we have control over the actions of others (we do not) 4. if we accept that victims can be blamed, we are creating culturally legitimate victims 5. if victims are to blame for their victimization, then victimizers are absolved of their criminal behaviour
Resilience ability to successfully recover from trauma -Cope & Recover -depends on protective mechanisms (insulators)
Victim Impact Statement written or oral statement by victim that gives them an opportunity to demonstrate the physical, financial, and emotional impacts of their victimization
